The Motability Scheme has helped many people in the UK gain access to adapted vehicles, but it’s not always the right fit for everyone. Whether you don’t qualify, want more flexible terms, or simply don’t use a car every day, there are excellent alternatives available.
In this article, we explore three trusted options offering accessible transport solutions outside of the Motability Scheme: Accessible Vehicle Club, Mobility Vehicle Hire, and WAV Compare.
1. Accessible Vehicle Club – Flexible Accessible Vehicle Subscription
If you only need a vehicle occasionally or prefer to avoid long-term leasing commitments, Accessible Vehicle Club could be your ideal solution. This innovative vehicle subscription service gives users access to Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs), adapted and standard vehicles only when they need them—perfect for occasional use without the cost of full-time ownership.
This flexible service is well suited for:
- People who don’t want to pay for a vehicle that sits unused 90% of the time
- Families or carers who require a vehicle for specific outings or medical visits
- Individuals who hire vehicles frequently and want a more cost-effective option
With home delivery and simple booking, Accessible Vehicle Club offers the convenience of hire with the freedom of a subscription.
Why choose Accessible Vehicle Club?
- 6 & 12 Month Plans
- Book only when needed
- Great for infrequent or flexible users
2. Mobility Vehicle Hire – Flexible WAV Leasing Options
If you need a wheelchair accessible or adapted vehicle for just a few days, months or years, Mobility Vehicle Hire offers a practical solution. They provide a range of adapted vehicles for short, medium, or long-term hire, allowing customers to choose what works best for their schedule and budget.
This option is perfect for:
- Temporary needs, such as during recovery or rehabilitation
- Travellers visiting the UK who require an accessible vehicle
- People in transition between vehicles or waiting for a Motability application to be processed
With nationwide coverage and a wide selection of WAVs, Mobility Vehicle Hire offers the convenience of rental with a personal, customer-focused approach.
What Mobility Vehicle Hire offers:

Buying a used WAV is ideal for:
- Drivers not eligible for the Motability Scheme

Is the Motability Scheme Right for You?
The Motability Scheme has many benefits, but it may not suit everyone due to eligibility criteria, limited flexibility, or long wait times. That’s where these alternatives come in—offering different paths to mobility that align with your lifestyle and needs.
Whether you’re looking for short-term access, flexible rental options, or a used WAV to buy outright, services like Accessible Vehicle Club, Mobility Vehicle Hire, and WAV Compare provide freedom and choice outside the traditional scheme.
